The 70s & 80s Babies

Dear Diary,

I was catching up with some old friends.. and we just kinda rack up some fond memories...

50 fond memories...

1. I can still recall the 5.30pm cartoon time...watching He-man, MASK, Transformers, Silver Hawk and Mickey Mouse. Not to mention my all time favorite, Ninja turtles, My Little Pony and Smurfs too.

2. Most of us 70s & 80s babies grew up brushing your teeth with a mug in Primary school during recess time. You will squat by a drain with all your classmates beside you, and brush your teeth with a colored mug. The teachers said you must brush each side 10 times too.

3. You know what SBC stands for.

4. You pay 40 cents for Chocolate or Strawberry MILK every week in class. Especially for those skinny kids, your teacher would make you order. Yummy.. my favorite then... but tink I put on too much weight after that...

5. You watch a very popular Malay dubbed Japanese drama on RTM1 about schoolgirls who possess powerful skills in volleyball called Meoro Attack.

6. I still recal the pager trend as well as the first slim mobile... Walking around with them is like having that special 'air' surrounding you... everyone look and you with envy... hehe.. I still recall how happy I was when I got my first pager in primary and fist mobile in sec 1... I was just that lucky few in class that own one... and I still remember how we got to hide it secretly so that I'll not be caught by teachers...

7. SBS buses used to be non-air conditioned. The bus seats are made of wood and the cushion is red. The big red bell gives a loud BEEP! when pressed. There are colorful tickets for TIBS buses. The conductor will check for tickets by using a machine which punches a hole in the ticket.

8. Envelopes given to us to donate to Sharity Elephant every Children's Day.

9. You've probably read Young Generation magazine. You know who's Vinny the little vampire and Acai the constable. Then there's reader's Digest....

10. You were there when they first introduced MRT here. You went for the first ride with your parents and you would kneel on the seat to see the scenery.

11. Movie tickets used to cost only $3.50.

12. Gals are fascinated by Strawberry Short Cake and Barbie Dolls. Geez.. I am one of those fanatics.. that got gaga over barbie dolls... they simply drive me mad.. haha.. and I could only get them as a reward each time I do well in school... well.. since I have done pretty okie... not too bad..at least I hit the target.. so I am rewarded with quite a few of them.. hehe... Till now I still have them other than a few that I have given to my little neice... I actually few the pinch when I give it to her.. can you believe it.. lol.. I am not trying to be petty.. but I treasure my barbie dolls k... and I worked hard for them...

13. You learn to laugh like The Count in Sesame Street. Geez.. I still recall the time I watch sesame street with Benjamin (my childhood fren) in Aunty Lixia's bungalow at sunset way... There we got teacher April (She's our nanny... who's employed souly to teach us from manner to books) who jaga us...

14. You longed to buy tibits called Kaka (20 cents per pack), and Ding Dang (50 cents per box), that had a toy in it and it changes every week not forgetting the 15 cents animal crackers and the ring pop, where the lollipop is the diamond on the ring.

15. You watched TV2 (also known as Channel 10) cartoons because Channel 5 never had enough cartoons for you.

16. Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, The Three Investigators, Famous Five and Secret Seven are probably the thickest story books you ever thought you have read. Even Sweet Valley High and Malory Towers. I miss those books... I still recall Teacher April made us read Enid Blyton books... and I love them all...

17. KFC used to be a high class restaurant that serve food in plates and let you use metal forks and knives.

18. The most vulgar thing you said was asshole and idiot and THE MOST EXTREME WAS 'super white'...you just couldn't bring yourself to say the hokkien relative

19. Catching was the IN thing and twist as the magic word.

20. Your English workbooks was made of some damn poor quality paper that was smooth and yellow.

21. CDIS were your bestfriend.

22. The only computer lessons in school involved funny pixellised characters in 16 colors walking about trying to teach you maths.

23. Waterbottles were slinged around your neck and a must everywhere you go.

24. Boys loved to play soccer with small plastic balls in the basketball court.

25. Teng-teng, five stones, chapteh, hentam bola and zero point were all the rage with the girls and boys too... How I miss the recess time.. playing zero point... one leg..

26. Science was fun with the balsam and the angsana being the most important plants of our lives, guppies and swordtail being the most important fish. SOmehow, it reminds me of Mrs Lim, my favorite Teacher. I would have to say, she's the main reason for whom I am today. She turns me from a rebellious girl.. to someone more obedient. She gives me support, encouragement... she made me see light in the dark tunnel.. if wasn't for her I probably won't made it all the way to the Uni... I can never thank her enough...though I know I won't have a chance to do so now... but I know she would be happy to see that I am doing well... and I know she would be there looking over me... =)

27. Who can forget Ahmad, Bala, Sumei and John, eternalized in our minds from the textbooks. Even Mr Wally & Mr. Yakki. What abt Miss Lala??? And Zaki and Tini in Malay Textbooks?
O yes... Mr Wally is a character I can nerver forget...Then in Sec 2, Chapter 13 on reproductive systems.. everyone was so excited abt it... is it still chapter 13? I wonder.. hehe...

28. We carry out experiments of our own to get ourselves badges for being a Young Zoologist/Botanist etc. You bet, I have all the badges.. thanks for Mrs Lim... Hehe.. Cuz I was her assistant, helping her very often.. and because she's also the science teacher.. I put in extra effort to get all the badges.. hehe... think I still have most of them...

29. Every Children's day and National day you either get pins or pens with 'Happy Children's Day 1993' or dumb with 'Happy National Day 1994'. I still remember Mrs Lim secretly giving me an additional children's day present on Children's Day in another room every year... hehe.. Even if it's just a small pencil case, pretty ruler (you know those with glitters and water inside)... I used to keep them till JCs... and my mum made me throw away... *sob sob*

30. In Primary six you had to play buddy for the younger kids like big sister and brother.

31. We wear BM2000, BATA, or Pallas shoes. I knew I was just one of those naughty gal, that bought a white rebok shoe, and just because the vice principal knew my mum I was kinda gaga and had simply no respect for the teachers... lol...

32. Your form teacher taught you Maths, Science and English. Yeah... mine was Mrs Lim obviously...

33. The worksheets were made of brown rough paper of poor quality. It's some recycled paper eh?

34. You went to school in slippers and a raincoat when it rained, and you find a dry spot in the
school to sit down, dry your feet, and wear your dry and warm socks and shoes.

35. School dismissal time was normally around 1 pm.

36. There would be spelling tests and mental sums to do almost everyday. Yucks I hate spelling... I still recall how bad I was and Mrs lim would always write my name on the black-board... even teacher April was helpless... but with Mrs Lim's coaching.. I did well even for English though.. you bet.. I hate languages.. Chinese dictation too.. though I always score 100%... but it's through hard work... I still recall how my mum nearly went crazy over me trying to remember all those words.. I wld just make her test me till I get everything right.. I am a perfectionist since young... =p

37. Your friends considered you lucky and rich if your parents gave you $3 or more for pocket money everyday. Ya man.. and you would always have the extra money to spurge and treat your fellow friends.. but then again, you have lots of friends but none true...

38. You see Wee Kim Wee's face in the school hall.

39. You freak out when the teacher tells you to line up according to height and hold hands with the corresponding boy or girl.

40. Boys like to catch fighting spiders. Yeeks.. They would put in a match box then let it out to fight..

41. Collecting and battling erasers was a pastime for boys. Hehe.. That was something I played too.. We would buy huge erasers hoping it would increase the chance of winning.. and collect more erasers.. you can imagine the twitch in the face each time you lost your fav 'Champion' eraser to your classmate...

42. Autograph books were loaded with "Best Wishes", "Forget Me Not", and small poems like "Bird fly high, hard to catch.Friend like you, hard to forget". Haha... I have that... In fact I still keep that.. once in awhile when I take it out to read.. it's like so sweet...

43. Class monitors and prefects loved to say "You talk somemore, I write your name ah!"

44. There were at least 40 people in one class.

45. Large, colorful schoolbags were carried. I still remember owning this bag of the brand "colour" something like that... It's a bright pink bag.. which would catch everyone's attention... and it's pretty expensive too.. Now that I talk about it I realized I was such an attention seeker then.. haha.. Thank god I am not so now...

46. You brought every single book to school, even though there was one thing called the timetable.

47. 50 cents worth huge serving of mee rebus or chix rice! Indeed the Mee rebus is my fav stores.. I still recall everytime during recess I would always make a trip to the canteen to help mrs Lim buy her favorite teh in plastic bag but not so hot (she don't like the smell from the hot plastic) otherwise I would help her to buy yogurt drink.. while I would buy cuttle fish... The drink stall aunty already know me so well that I always get to jump Q and have discount... hehe.. As you can see, I am teacher's pet I didn't know till someone told me... =p
Well you can't help it that every one loves you...

48. There's this new implementation of 'tough club'; this new club for over-weight students.. Stupid government... I was only less than 10% over weight and I was called into the program.. I was still in primary 3. I guess it's a new system so it was kinda strict and stringent, not even 1% overweight is allowed.

We were supposed to use our recess time to go to the hall for exercise and skip our recess. I undergone this program and in less than a week, I collapsed. I lost 5kg but I suddenly have acute pain in class and was rolling on the floor. You bet, I never had a day MC, I was a healthy kid then, so Mrs Lims send me to the sick bay and called for mummy. The following day, I went back to school but history repeats... this goes on for few days and Doctor finally diagnose that I have suffered from Gastric Ulcer and the doctor was shocked that a young child like me would suffer from that.

The culprit?

The starving for a week... I was pulled out of the program and obviously losing 5kg also means I am acceptable weight, in fact almost going underweight.. With the illness, I gradually grop more weight and went under weight...

Anyhow the program had adjustments after that... to be less stringent...

49. Do you still recall, playing lanterns with your neighbors and friends on festives... burning the candle... playing with fire even when it's a NO-NO... Then there's the see-saw time.. where you still get to play with sand and merry-go round... (I don't see any now..only some plastic play ground).. of there's also the shiny card for 50cts each?

50. I also recall the past where we don't shut our doors but just the gates.. neighbors would say Hi and the Aunties would chat and gossips loudly... it's so much more warmth as compare to all the door shut environments.. whim you hardly know your neighbors. Don't even know when a murder or robbery happen... It's less unite as compare to the past.. where my family can go for charlets and not worried that no one would look after our house...

Memories.. changes....Times changed.. things changed... but our memories don't.. just in case you have placed these fond memories at the back of your brain, let me dig them out for you and put that smile on your face...

Cheers..

I chose my frenz. chose who i go out with and I'm particular. I guess I'm not lack of frenz but i draw clear line the "category" of fren they are in. Nonetheless, I'm lucky to have many truthful ones...
